anutami Posts 81	We took this hike a few weeks ago and it was my kids first backpacking trip. Great weekend trip! Camped 1 night on the summit. Gearing up for the hike: It was a bit cold at night and in the shade/ The rock scramble up the first section we reached the top! Only took bribes of sour patch kids signed in campsite for the night looking out toward Agua Caliente and beyond

billd987 Posts 5	Good stuff I went up today on the same trail with my 8 and 10 year olds for a day hike. It was a little chilly on top (with snow), but all in all we had a great time.

DHeuschele Posts 41	I like the fact that you got them to the top at that early of an age. I have a 9 year old who went on his first backpack trip at about the age of the little boy. Today my 9 year old can out hike virtually all adults and on almost all types of terrain. He can hike San Jacinto without breaks. He mostly ran a 10 mile hike this weekend. I struggle to keep up with him on some hikes and I have been hiking for decades on a fairly regular basis (probably 20-30 hikes a year including a few backpack trips). I think starting them young, make sure that most outings are fun for the child, and doing outings fairly regularly (I do an outing every other week or so with my child) will hook the child for life on the adventures of the outdoors (at least I hope so because mine is hooked now - the life part is still to be determined). It looks like a great trip and a great memory.
